Herb Ritts (amerikanisch, 1952 – 2002) war einer der bemerkenswertesten Mode-und Porträtfotografen der späten 1980er und 1990er Jahre. Ritts wuchs in Kalifornien auf und studierte Volkswirtschaftslehre und Kunstgeschichte am Bard College in New York und kehrte anschließend zurück an die Westküste der USA. Seine spontanen Aufnahmen von Richard Gere zu Beginn seiner Schauspielkarriere 1978 wurden in der amerikanischen Vogue, Esquire und in der Mademoiselle veröffentlicht. Modedesigner in Europa und Magazine in New York erkannten Ritts Talent als Autodidakt und er entwickelte sich zu einem renommierten Fotografen. Ritts Fotografien werden als „Retro-Neo-Deco“-Stil beschrieben und wurden häufig an beeindruckenden Schauplätzen, wie in der Wüste, am Meer oder anderen schönen Orten aufgenommen.

Ritts ist bekannt für seine Serie Fred with Tires (1984) und sein Porträt von Madonna für das Cover ihres Rekord-Albums von 1986 True Blue und auch für unkonventionelle Fotos von Elizabeth Taylor und Dizzy Gillepsie. Weitere Personen, die er fotografierte sind: Antonio Banderas, Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Stephen Hawking, Michael Jordan, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, B.B. King, Nelson Mandela, Edward Norton, Christopher Reeve und Tina Turner sowie die Künstlerkollegen Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente und Roy Lichtenstein. Ritts verfasste viele Bücher, wie Men/Women (1989), Notorious (1992), Africa (1994), Work (1996), Duo (1991) und Pictures (1988).

Seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Museen, wie in der Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain in Paris, im Los Angeles County Museum of Art und in dem Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, in der National Portrait Gallery und der Hayward Gallery in London und im PS1 Contemporary Art Center, im Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum und im Museum am Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, ausgestellt. Mehrere seiner Werke wurden auch vom Getty Museum in Los Angeles erworben.
