Biography
1911
Born Theodore Brett Weston, in Los Angeles on December 16, to Edward Weston, photographer, and wife Flora Chandler.
 
1928
Edward Weston opens Tropico portrait studio with Brett as an assistant, who does most of Edward's developing of portrait negatives.
 
They move briefly to San Francisco in August.
 
1929
Moves with Edward Weston to Carmel in January.
 
1930
Moves out of his father's house in San Fernando Valley and establishes his own studio.
 
1931
Marries Elinore Stone on January 16; the couple moves to Santa Maria, California, in October and establish a photography studio.
 
1932
Elinore and Brett move to Santa Barbara in April, and set up a studio; the couple divorce later that year.
 
1936
Moves to San Francisco and marries Cicely Edmunds on September 23.
 
1938
Only child, Erica, born January 11, in Los Angeles, California. In 1939, Cicely leaves Brett and Erica.
 
1940
Moves with Erica to Santa Monica, Southern California.
 
1941
Takes a job at Douglas Aircraft as darkroom technician.
 
1942
Takes a job at North American Aviation as industrial photographer.
 
1943
Works as a cameraman for Twentieth Century Fox.
 
Enters draft, and is inducted at Fort McArthur on December 17th. Begins basic training at Camp Roberts, California.
 
1944
Transferred to Signal Corps duty in New York City.
 
1945
In November, is re-assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas near El Paso.
 
1946
Discharged from the army on March 31, and returns to Erica in California.
 
1948
Moves to Carmel and lives in Wildcat Hill, Bodie House with Erica.
 
Meets Dody Warren, Edward Weston's new assistant.
 
In November, buys eighty acres of land with his brother Cole at Garrapata Creek ten miles south of Carmel. Makes his own adobe bricks to build studio-home.
 
1952
Interrupts own career to print, under his father's direction, a Fiftieth Anniversary Portfolio of Edward Weston's work, in edition of 100, each containing 12 of Edward's photographs. Cole Weston, Dody, Morley and Frances Baer all aid in the task, which consumes most of the year.
 
Marries Dody on December 6, in Carmel, California.
 
1955
Second print project for Edward Weston. Prints 8 copies of 800 photographs that Edward considered his best work.
 
1956
Brett and Dody divorce.
 
1958
Edward Weston dies on January 1.
 
1959
Begins extensive travels: makes first trip to Glen Canyon, spending nearly three weeks on the river.
 
1960
First trip to Europe, including British Isles, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria and Greece. Spends more than 8 months on the road, covering 30,000 miles.
 
1961
First extended trip to Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
 
1964
First photographic trip to Baja, California
 
1966
Travels to Oregon and Baja, California.
 
1967
Extended trips to Baja, California.
 
1969-1970
Meets Christine (Tina) Goodwyn, and marries on July 26. They are divorced in 1970.
 
1978
First trip to Hawaii.
 
1980
Completes his first house in Hawaii, where he intends to live part of the time.
 
1992
Dies January 22 from stroke complications in Kona, Hawaii.
