  The Big-Money-Club

Spending $20 million, $50 million or even $100 million on a painting at auction is serious business. Hot duels between mysterious billionaires, bidding on the phone, from the hidden sky booths in the auction room or from the crowded auction floor, have become the stuff of headlines.

Back in 1999, artnet Magazine's then-art-market correspondent Andrew Decker envisioned the sales of a $100 million painting -- a prediction that came true in 2004 when Pablo Picasso's delicate Rose Period picture, Boy with a Pipe, sold to an unknown buyer for $104 million.

As Decker pointed out, however, auctions and the art market are not strictly about the bottom line. The big evening sales at Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips are about a special kind of art-world theater, society and passion, as well as about art and money.

What follows is a listing of the top lots at auction during the past 16 years, a collection of masterpieces by Cezanne, de Kooning, Klimt, Picasso, van Gogh and several other household names. What makes this particular cream rise to the top? We invite the readers of the artnet Newsletter to peruse the pictures and decide for themselves.
