Wauters, Emile(-Charles)

(b Brussels, 19 Nov 1846; d Paris, 11 Dec 1933). Belgian painter. He trained in Brussels in the studio of the decorator Charles Albert (1821–89) and then became a pupil of Jean-François Portaels. In 1867 he spent six months in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris, subsequently visiting Italy and Germany. On his return to Brussels he showed his Battle of Hastings at the Salon of 1869 and, three years later, caused a stir with another large, dramatic historical composition, the Insane Painter Hugo van der Goes at the Monastery of Roode (Brussels, Mus. A. Mod.). Further success in exhibitions in Vienna, Paris, Berlin and Munich confirmed his position as a leading history painter of the time, and the city of Brussels accordingly commissioned from him two historical compositions for the Hôtel de Ville (in situ).
