(b London, 1 June 1832; d London, 12 July 1924). Painter, wife of (1) E. M. Ward. She was the daughter of George Raphael Ward and the miniaturist Mary Webb ( fl 1828–49). An indulged only child, she was encouraged in her artistic talent and received instruction at home, supplemented by attendance at Henry Sass’s drawing school. She also had advice from her husband, whom she married in 1848 against her family’s wishes. She made her exhibition début at the Royal Academy in 1846 with the drawing Elizabeth Woodville Parting from the Duke of York (priv. col., artist’s family). After her marriage Ward continued to attend Sass’s and also the Royal Academy Schools lectures, although they were officially closed to women. From 1850 she exhibited widely in Britain, though she sent her principal works to the Royal Academy throughout her career. She also exhibited at the Society of Female Artists, which was formed in 1857.
