Vieira Serrão, Domingos
(b Tomar, c. 1570; d Tomar 1632). Portuguese painter. Of aristocratic origin, he was the son of a knight of the royal house. He was court painter to Philip III of Portugal (Philip IV of Spain), and he worked mostly at the courts of Lisbon and Madrid, though he also carried out commissions in Coimbra. In collaboration with Simão Rodrigues he worked on large fresco compositions at the church of the monastery of Anunciada (subject unknown; 1608; destr. 1755) and on the Allegory of Charity (1613; destr. 1750) on the ceiling of the church of the Hospital Real of Todos-os-Santos. Also lost is the fresco decoration of c. 1630 painted for the Buen Retiro in Madrid.
