Viani [Vianini], Antonio Maria

(b Cremona; fl 1582; d ?Mantua, 1632–5). Italian architect and painter. Zaist noted that Viani was a pupil of Giulio Campi and mentioned his earliest recorded work, a painting in Cremona, signed and dated 1582 (untraced). Viani moved to Munich in 1586 to work at the court of William V, Duke of Bavaria (reg 1579–98), where he participated in the decoration of the Residenz (see MUNICH, §IV, 2). His work there, at the Antiquarium and the Grottenhof, was badly damaged during World War II. He executed a number of canvases for the Jesuit church of St Michael under the direction of Friedrich Sustris and Pieter Candid, including the Glorification of the Name of Jesus (in situ). Viani’s artistic personality was influenced by the northern European and Italian Mannerist traditions represented in Bavaria.
