Vecellio.

Italian family of artists. They came from Pieve di Cadore and can be traced back to the 13th century. The family, which included numerous notaries, magistrates and mayors, became wealthy and prominent locally. There were artists in two branches, one descended from Conte Vecellio, a notary who served as the town mayor, military leader and ambassador to Venice, and one from his brother Giovanni Antonio Vecellio (d 1497). The son of Conte Vecellio, Gregorio Vecellio (c. 1455–1530), who was a civic official in Cadore, had two sons who were painters. The elder, (1) Francesco Vecellio, trained as a painter in Venice, where the family name was linked with the timber trade. He was joined there by his younger brother Tiziano Vecellio (see TITIAN), who became the leading painter in Venice and one of the most important artists in Italy in the 16th century. Titian trained his second son, (2) Orazio Vecellio, who painted in his father’s style. (3) Cesare Vecellio belonged to the branch of the family descended from Giovanni Antonio. He trained in Titian’s workshop and remained there until the latter’s death in 1576, when he began to work independently. His younger brother, Fabrizio Vecellio (b early 1520s), was also a painter. (4) Marco Vecellio, the son of Titian’s second cousin, was a mediocre follower of the master’s style, as was Marco’s son Tiziano Vecellio, or ‘Tizianello’ (1570–1650), who wrote a biography of Titian (La vita del insigne Tiziano Vecellio, 1622). Tommaso Vecellio (1576–c. 1629), Marco’s nephew, who worked in Pieve di Cadore, was another mediocre follower of Titian. Francesco, Cesare, Orazio and Marco were the family members allowed to use the appellation ‘di Tiziano’. Titian’s assistant GIROLAMO DENTI was also permitted to use this signature.
