Uphues, Joseph (Johann Ludwig)

(b Sassenberg, Westphalia, 23 May 1850; d Berlin, 2 Jan 1911). German sculptor. After an apprenticeship as a carpenter and travels (c. 1868–70), he took up an apprenticeship as a mason. In 1878 he began to study sculpture at the Königliche Akademische Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin under Reinhold Begas and Fritz Schaper. In 1882 he became Begas’s master pupil, and between 1885 and 1890–91 he was his assistant, although he developed his own style and became an extremely successful monumental sculptor.
