Uceda Castroverde, Juan de

(b Seville, c. 1570; d Seville, 1631). Spanish painter. The earliest reference to Uceda is in 1593, when he began to practise as a master painter, which indicates that his apprenticeship ended around 1590. His painting was strongly influenced by Sevillian Mannerism of the last third of the 16th century, but during the early years of the 17th century it developed towards a more Baroque naturalism. His first known work was executed in collaboration with Alonso Vázquez, who departed for New Spain in 1603, leaving Uceda to complete the unfinished upper part of his Death of St Hermengild (Seville, Mus. B.A.). About 1615 Uceda executed paintings for the altar of St John the Baptist in the convent church of S María del Socorro, Seville. His Earthly Trinity (1623; Seville, Mus. B.A.) is a work of intense feeling and demonstrates the extent to which the artist had moved away from the cold Mannerist spirit in which he had been trained. Christ Served by Angels in the chapel of the Cristo de Maracaibo (Seville Cathedral), the Immaculate Conception with SS Joseph, Benedict and Francis (Seville, S Vicente) and the Adoration of the Shepherds (Carmona, nr Seville, priv. col., see Valdivieso and Serrera, fig. 169) are all characteristic works. At his death Uceda left unfinished the paintings he had begun in 1629 for the reredos of S Vicente, Seville, including the Story of the Bed of Roses and the Martyrdom of St Vincent (both in situ); they were completed by Francisco Varela.
