Tricht, Aert van
( fl Maastricht, 1492–1501). Netherlandish metal-caster. On 23 October 1492 he finished the monumental and richly decorated copper font of St Janskerk, ’s Hertogenbosch, and in the same year he cast a seven-branched candlestand (destr.) for the Franciscans in Maastricht. In 1495–6 he cast some copper railings (destr.) for the Brotherhood Chapel of St Janskerk, ’s Hertogenbosch, based on wooden models made by Alart du Hameel. Two signed works by Aert van Tricht survive: an undated brass font originally from the St Nicolaaskerk (destr.) in Maastricht (now in Maastricht, Onze Lieve Vrouwe, stripped of its lid and decorations), and the arched candelabrum of 1501, spanning the choir of Xanten Cathedral. This consists of three Late Gothic traceried arches carrying twenty-four evenly spaced candlesticks. Columns flanking the central arch support statues of the church’s two patron saints, St Victor and St Helena (h. 1 m). A few smaller candlesticks can be attributed to Aert van Tricht on stylistic grounds, as well as some choir lecterns, notably the Eagle lectern from St Pieterskerk, Leuven (now New York, Cloisters), and a bronze tabernacle in Bocholt Church (Belgium).
