Tortolero, Pedro
(b Seville, c. 1700; d Seville, 1766). Spanish painter and engraver. He was a pupil of Domingo Martínez, but his engravings do not show great skill in drawing or technique. He produced devotional engravings and portraits, and his illustrations for the reports of Lorenzo Bautista de Zúñiga, Annales eclesiásticos i seglares ... de la ciudad de Sevilla (Seville, 1747), are mainly of iconographic interest. They include two large plates representing Philip V and his Court Entering Seville in 1724 and the Transfer of the Remains of Ferdinand III (the Saint; d 1252), to their new resting-place, with the procession passing Seville Cathedral. The frontispiece was engraved by Juan Fernández ( fl 1747) after a drawing by Tortolero. Other engravings of 1738 are of buildings and views of Seville.
