(2) Torii Kiyomasu I

( fl Edo [now Tokyo], 1697–1722). Woodblock print designer, possibly the eldest son or brother of (1) Kiyonobu I. Although his exact artistic lineage has not been clearly identified, his extensive body of work falls into the orthodox Torii style. He excelled at yakushae (‘pictures of actors’), in particular powerful, large-format prints depicting aragoto (‘rough stuff’; a kabuki acting style). His prints of Shosei Ichikawa Danjuro no Takenuki Goro (‘The actor Ichikawa Danjuro I as Takenuki Goro’, 1697; Tokyo, N. Mus.), Shosei Ichikawa Danjuro no Yamagami Saemon to Shosei Yamanaka Heikuro no Suzuki no Oji (‘The actors Ichikawa Danjuro I as Yamagami Saemon and Yamanaka Heikuro I as Suzuki no Oji’, late 17th century; Kansas City, MO, Nelson–Atkins Mus. A.; see fig.) and Shosei Ichikawa Danjuro to Shosei Yamnaka Heikuro no Zohiki (‘The actors Ichikawa Danjuro I and Yamakawa Heikuro I in Zohiki’; 1701) exhibit the characteristic Torii hyotanashi (‘gourd [bulbous] legs’) and mimizugaki (‘wriggling-worm line’) style.

Part of the Torii family
