(1) Torii Kiyonobu I

(b Osaka, 1664; d Edo [now Tokyo], 1729). Woodblock print designer and founder of the Torii school. He was the son of Torii Kiyomoto (1645–1702). In 1687 the family moved to Edo, where Kiyonobu made a name for himself in 1690 by painting signboards for the Ichimuraza. In 1702 Kiyonobu succeeded his father as head of the family. He produced signboards and playbills for all Edo theatres and established the Torii family as Edo’s leading kabuki illustrators.
