(2) Simon Thomassin

(b Paris, 1654; d Paris, 1733). Great-grand-nephew of (1) Philippe Thomassin. He studied under the engraver Etienne Picart. He was noticed by Louis XIV’s powerful minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who sent him to Rome on a royal scholarship from 1676 to 1680. On his return to France he became Engraver to the King and a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. He engraved portraits and religious subjects after Nicolas Poussin, Eustache Le Sueur, Bon Boullogne and Philippe de Champaigne. His son Henri-Simon was his pupil.
