Thiersch, Friedrich von

(b Marburg, 18 April 1852; d Munich, 23 Dec 1921). German architect and teacher. He studied architecture (1868–73) in Stuttgart and then worked (1874–9) for the architectural practice Mylius & Bluntschli. There, his remarkable skill as a draughtsman attracted attention, bringing him a post (1879) at the Technische Hochschule, Munich, at the age of 27; in 1882 he succeeded Gottfried von Neureuther (1811–87) as Professor of Architecture. As a teacher he had a lasting influence on several leading architects of the next generation, including German Bestelmeyer, Paul Bonatz and Theodor Fischer. He established an immediate reputation by winning first prize in the competition (1882) for the Berlin Reichstag, jointly with Paul Wallot, to whom the commission was later entrusted.
