Teofilowicz, Marcin [Polacco, Martino Teofilo; Polak, Martin Teofil; Polonus, Martinus Theophilus; Teofilo, Martino]
(b Lwów [now L’viv, Ukraine], ?1570; d Brixen [Bressanone], 25 Jan 1639). Polish painter, active in Austria. Before 1599 he collaborated in Kraków with the court painter Marcin Kober, and afterwards embarked on an artistic tour of Italy. After visiting Prague (1600) he settled in Trent, where before 1616 he became court painter to the archbishops. Between 1621 and 1622 he went on an artistic tour of central Italy. From 1623 he worked in Salzburg and subsequently (1626–37) found employment in Innsbruck as court painter to Count Leopold of Tyrol (1586–1632). From 1637 until his death he was court painter to Wilhelm von Welsberg, Bishop of Brixen. His altarpieces, portraits and murals can be found in Trent and in Esztergom (Hungary), Innsbruck, Prague, Salzburg and Zurich. Treatments of anti-Protestant themes and of the Virgin and saints predominate in his work, in which murals occupy an important place. His work had some influence on the development of painting in the Tyrol.
