Sifer, Conrat [Cunrat; Conrat von Sinssheim, Sünshen, Sünshem, Sünsheim, Sünssheim, Sünnesheim]

( fl c. 1489–92). German architect and sculptor. His name derives either from the town of Sinsheim, near Heilbronn, or the village of Sinzheim, near Baden-Baden. A citizen of Strasbourg from 1491 and Master of the Works at Strasbourg Cathedral in 1491–2, Sifer may be the ‘meister Conrat’ who was the sculptor of the Martyrdom of St Lawrence in the tympanum of the St Lawrence Portal (1500–01; destr. French Revolution). He may also have been the sculptor ‘Conrat Swopp’ —i.e. Schwabe (Ger.: ‘Swabian’)—mentioned in Strasbourg by an undated late medieval source. It is not clear whether he was related to Hans Syfer. The only work that can be securely assigned to him is the screen in St Georges, Séléstat, which was completed c. 1490. This celebrated work was destroyed in the French Revolution, except for a few fragments.
