Shebuyev, Vasily (Kuz’mich)

(b Kronshtadt, 13 Apr 1777; d St Petersburg, 28 June 1855). Russian painter, graphic artist and teacher. He went in 1782 to the school of the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. From 1790 onwards he studied history painting under Grigory Ugryumov. At the conclusion of his studies in 1797 he received a pension and was sent to Italy in 1803. Returning in 1807, he was made an Academician for his work on the decoration of the Kazan’ Cathedral in St Petersburg. In 1812 he was elected professor of history painting at the Academy and from 1831 head of the department of painting and sculpture.
