(2) Johann Peter Schwanthaler I

(b Ried im Innkreis, 20 June 1720; d Ried, 20 July 1795). Grandson of (1) Thomas Schwanthaler. In 1758 he took over the sculpture workshop in Ried from his father Johann Franz Schwanthaler (1683–1762). The earliest of his surviving works, which are all wood-carvings, are sculptures for the side altars and the chancel in the parish church of Hohenzell (1761 and 1762): these are figures in the tradition of the family workshop, and Schwanthaler’s later stylistic idiosyncrasies are barely detectable. Two pairs of Apostolic Princes (1763) in the parish churches of Mettmach and Tumeltsham are, however, more striking, displaying the characteristic features of Schwanthaler’s style: upright, preternaturally tall figures with an exaggerated contrapposto; sharp-edged folds of drapery forming zigzags and enclosing rhomboid spaces; individualistically proportioned faces, with slanting, half-closed eyes, narrow noses with accentuated nostrils, expressive mouths and long chins; and anatomical exactitude in the treatment of the hands.

Part of the Schwanthaler family
