Ryndin, Vadim (Fyodorovich)

(b Moscow, 15 Jan 1902; d Moscow, 9 April 1974). Russian stage designer. He studied at Vkhutemas in Moscow and began working in the theatre in 1922. From 1925 he worked at the Kamerny Theatre, Moscow, first as a scene painter, becoming a designer in 1927 and Principal Designer from 1931 to 1936. His most successful work there was the décor for Vsevolod Vishnevsky’s Optimistic Tragedy (1933; Moscow, Bakhrushin Cent. Theat. Mus.). It was here that the clearly epic and romantic tendencies in Ryndin’s work and his ability to combine Constructivist and pictorial methods in design became apparent.
