Robertson, Suze [Bisschop-Robertson, Suzanne]

(b The Hague, 17 Dec 1855; d The Hague, 18 Oct 1922). Dutch painter. From 1875 to 1877 she trained at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten, The Hague, where, together with George Hendrik Breitner and Willem de Zwart, she attended classes given by Johan Philip Koelman. She was greatly interested in the modern tendencies of the Hague school. After qualifying to teach drawing in secondary schools, she taught in Rotterdam until 1882 when she moved to Amsterdam. She enrolled for evening classes at the Rijksacademie. This encouraged her to devote herself more and more to painting, and in 1883 she decided to give up teaching. In May 1883 she had a painting of Still-life with Vegetables (The Hague, Gemeentemus.) accepted at the Internationale Koloniale en Untvoerhandel Tentoonstelling in Amsterdam. In 1884 she returned to The Hague. Between 1884 and 1889 she painted genre scenes and still-lifes in the villages of Blaricum and Laren. In these works the paint is applied in thick layers and the dominant colours are black, yellow, dark red and blue (e.g. Girl in Repose, c. 1889; The Hague, Gemeentemus.). In 1892 she married Richard Bisschop (1849–1926), a painter of church interiors. The birth of a daughter in 1894 interrupted her painting career for some years, but from the early 1900s she again devoted herself completely to painting. Her interest in people and their surroundings, and emphasis on the sadder aspects of life, are reflected in her subject-matter: old women at work, dilapidated houses and cluttered courtyards. World War I made such a deep impression on her that she hardly touched a paint brush again.
