Rivalz.
French family of artists. Their studio dominated picture production in Toulouse from the mid-17th century to the end of the 18th. (1) Jean-Pierre Rivalz and his son (2) Antoine Rivalz and grandson (3) Pierre Rivalz all spent considerable periods in Rome before returning to take up official positions in their native city. They thus introduced their contemporaries in south-west France to modern Italian art. Other members of the family were the engraver Barthélemy Rivalz (1692after 1772), nephew of Antoine, and the painter Jean-Baptiste Despax (170973), Antoines son-in-law.
