Richard of Verdun
(b ?Verdun; fl 12881318). French illuminator. In 1288 he witnessed the sale by MASTER HONORÉ, illuminator in Paris, of a manuscript of Gratians Decretals (Tours, Bib. Mun., MS. 558, record on fol. 351r). He is also listed in the 1292 Paris tax rolls and was assessed at 8 sous parisis and mentioned as son-in-law and junior associate to Master Honoré of Rue Erembourc de Brie. In 1296 Richard had moved across the same street as an independent illuminator and was assessed at 14 sous; 12 sous in 1297; 16 sous in 1299 and again in 1300. That Richard was one of the major illuminators active in Paris is confirmed by a record of 1318 in which he is cited working with a junior associate, Jean de La Mare, on three large antiphonaries for the Sainte-Chapelle, producing large and small illuminated capital letters for which payment of 10 livres 13 sous was made.
