Pothoven, Hendrik

(bapt Amsterdam, 3 Nov 1726; d The Hague, 25 Jan 1807). Dutch painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He was apprenticed to Frans de Bakker ( fl 1736–65) and Philip van Dijk in Amsterdam, and he began his career producing portraits and townscapes. From van Dijk, who painted portraits and genre pieces, Pothoven learnt how to render textiles particularly well, earning the praise of the biographers van Eijnden and van der Willigen. He painted mostly commissioned portraits of prominent citizens at home (e.g. Family Portrait in an Interior, 1774; Amsterdam, Hist. Mus.), successfully capturing the individual character of each in a lively and natural way, much as Cornelis Troost did. He often made portrait studies in black and white chalk on blue paper.
