Pecham [Beham; Peham], Georg

(b Munich, c. 1568; d Munich, 1604). German painter, draughtsman and etcher. As a pupil of Melchior Bocksberger, he travelled with his master to Salzburg presumably in 1581 and to Regensburg c. 1585. In 1593 he was working as a master in Munich. In 1594 he painted the façade of the Pfeiffelmann house in Augsburg (fragment of fresco, Augsburg, priv. col.) and contributed to a series of etchings depicting the funeral of Archduke Charles of Styria (1540–90). Thereafter he worked in Salzburg (1598), in the Tyrol (1600) and later (c. 1602–3) in Rosenheim. Though there are scarcely any examples of his painting, numerous drawings and etchings have survived. His earliest signed drawing, a sheet in the family album of Andreas Blattner (1586; Copenhagen, Stat. Mus. Kst), was still entirely in the style of Bocksberger. His later style indicates that he visited Venice, perhaps c. 1594–5. Numerous copies and reproduction engravings after his originals suggest that he enjoyed high regard during his lifetime.
