(3) Magdalena (van) de Passe

(b Cologne, ?1596; d Utrecht, 1638). Engraver, daughter of (1) Crispijn de Passe (i). She produced relatively little, but her work is of high quality, for instance her two prints for the series Wonders of the World (1614), published by her father. She also contributed to the series of Sibyls (1617). Magdalena engraved several biblical scenes (e.g. Christ and the Woman of Canaan; Hollstein, no. 2) and a few portraits but mainly specialized in landscapes, some with mythological scenes, based on designs by such painters as Adam Elsheimer, Paul Bril, Rubens, Abraham Willaerts and Roelandt Savery. Her style is related to that of Hendrick Goudt, who also lived in Utrecht and worked after Elsheimer. Her work is delicate but powerful, with effective use of chiaroscuro. In 1630 her portrait was engraved by her brother Simon (Hollstein, no. 97). Magdalena’s marriage to Frederick van Bevervoorden in 1634 probably ended her career as an engraver, even though she was widowed in 1636.

Part of the Passe, de family
