Ozanne, Nicolas(-Marie)

(b Brest, 12 Jan 1728; d Paris, 3 Jan 1811). French draughtsman, engraver and marine engineer. He was a precocious draughtsman and at the age of ten was working at the Arsenal in Brest. In 1750 he was named drawing-master of the Gardes du Pavillon Amiral et de la Marine in Brest. Entrusting his appointment to his younger brother Pierre Ozanne (1737–1813), he was called in 1751 to Versailles to participate in the publication of the series of drawings and engravings entitled the Voyage du Roi Louis XV au Havre en 1749. He made contact with Parisian artists and the engineers and high functionaries of the Ministère de la Marine. In 1755–6 he had the chance to accompany Joseph Vernet to southern France when the latter painted his views of the Ports of France for Louis XV. He received the appointment of Dessinateur de la Marine in 1756 and published the Marine militaire ou recueil des différents vaisseaux qui servent à la guerre (Paris, 1762), a volume of didactic engravings. He was also named maritime instructor to the princes of the royal family and in 1769 became Ingénieur Ordinaire de la Marine. He produced numerous drawings, watercolours and engravings, among them two views of Paris (Navigation de barques et chalands sur la Seine devant les Tuileries and Les Chantiers du quai de la Grenouillère, lors de la construction d’un grand navire; both pen and black ink and black wash) now in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris. He is best known for his countless maritime drawings (views of French ports, naval battles, illustrated treatises on naval construction), some published as prints, the originals of others housed for the most part at the Musée de la Marine, Paris, and the Cabinet des Dessins, Musée du Louvre, Paris.
