Okumura, Togyu

(b Tokyo, 18 Feb 1889; d Tokyo, 25 Sept 1990). Japanese painter. In 1905 he entered the painting school of Hanko Kajita (1870–1917), where he learnt the techniques of Japanese-style painting (Nihonga; see JAPAN, §VI, 5(iii)) and met Kokei Kobayashi, whom he regarded as his teacher throughout his career. Prolonged financial difficulties prevented him from concentrating on painting for some time, and he was first selected to exhibit at the Inten of the Japan Art Institute in 1927. Thereafter, however, he achieved considerable success, particularly in the 1950s, when his talent suddenly came to fruition. He used pure colours and graceful compositions in such works as Naruto (1959) and Daigo (1972; both Tokyo, Yamatane Mus. A.). In 1947 he became a member of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1962 he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit.
