Nolpe, Pieter

(b Amsterdam, 1613–14; d Amsterdam, 1652–3). Dutch etcher, engraver and draughtsman. His 319 prints are dated between 1637 and 1652. There are a few emblems and biblical illustrations after his own designs, but most reproduce the work of other artists, such as Abraham Bosse, Claes Moeyaert, Willem van Nieulandt, Pieter Potter, Pieter Quast, Willem Schellinks, Simon de Vlieger and Jan van der Vucht (1603–37). Nolpe also made engravings of historical events, such as the cavalcades in Amsterdam in honour of Marie de’ Medici, Queen of France (1638; Hollstein, nos 86–94), after designs by Jan Martszen (c. 1607–after 1647), and those for Queen Henrietta Maria of England (1642; Hollstein, no. 161), after a painting by Pieter Potter. The influence of Jacques Callot can be seen in such works as the drawing of Ice Sports (1638; Amsterdam, Rijksmus.) and in Nolpe’s series of peasants and beggar types after Quast (1652; Hollstein, nos 292–315). The group of landscape paintings dated 1629–37 with the monogram PN, previously thought to be by Nolpe, has been attributed to Pieter de Neijn (1597–1639).
