Meneller, Caspar

(b Kaufbeuren, Swabia, c. 1575; d Augsburg, between 14 June and 10 Dec 1630). German sculptor. He came from a family of sculptors in Kaufbeuren, where he probably served his apprenticeship, in his father’s or uncle’s workshop. He must have subsequently worked for a sculptor in Munich, as from 1593 there exist numerous signed and dated drawings by him based on works of art in Munich (Copenhagen, Stat. Mus. Kst). He remained there until 1595 and was there again in October 1597; the subject-matter of his drawings indicates that in 1596 he must have travelled to Regensburg and Prague. In 1601 he qualified as a master in Augsburg, and in 1608 he took on Jeremias Geisselbrunn as his second apprentice.
