Mattheus [Matheis; Matheus; Mathieu], Georg

( fl ?1551–72). German woodcutter. Active in Augsburg and seemingly in Lyon, he worked principally after Italian masters, without developing an independent style of draughtsmanship. He carved religious and mythological subjects: his line is hard, and his figures are stiff and lifeless. Some woodcuts he signed fully, for example the chiaroscuro woodcut of the Flight into Egypt (Vienna, Albertina): ‘JORG MATHEIS FVRMSCHNEIDER VA. AUGSPURG’; others he signed only with M, such as Martha Leading Mary Magdalene into the Temple (London, BM). It has been suggested that he was the artist who signed a woodcut portrait of Martin Luther with ‘Jörg Formschneider 1551’ and who stayed in Wittenberg after 1551.
