Master of the Rouen Echevinage [Master of the Geneva Latini]

( fl c. 1460–80). French illuminator. The Master of the Geneva Latini, named after Brunetto Latini’s Li Livres dou trésor (Geneva, Bib. Pub. & U., MS. Fr. 160), is more appropriately known as the Master of the Rouen Echevinage: the name derives from the sumptuous manuscripts that he illustrated for the Bibliothèque des Echevins in Rouen (Paris, Bib. N., MSS Fr. 2685, 2623, 129, 2629, 2596). The Master was the dominant illuminator in Rouen after the departure of the English in 1449, when the city became a flourishing centre of manuscript production. Among the numerous Books of Hours painted by him, the finest is that sold in 1983 (London, Sotheby’s, 6 Dec 1983, lot 82).
