Master of the Privileges of Ghent and Flanders

( fl c. 1440–60). South Netherlandish illuminator. He was named by Winkler after a codex in Vienna (Österreich. Nbib., Cod. 2583), which is a unique historical document containing transcriptions of the privileges and statutes for the town of Ghent and the country of Flanders from 1241 to 1454. The manuscript is illuminated with 15 miniatures and marginal decoration of exceptionally high quality. The coats of arms and mottoes of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, are included in many of the borders. The Duke’s victory over the rebellious citizens of Ghent in 1453, depicted in the only two full-page miniatures of the codex, was probably the reason for the production of this magnificent manuscript, which may even have been intended as a work of atonement.
