Master of the Privileges

( fl Palma de Mallorca, c. 1334–49). Catalan illuminator and painter. He is named after the work with which he is most closely identified, a Libro de Privilegios (Palma de Mallorca, Archv Hist.) illuminated c. 1334. He was apparently the head of a thriving and important Mallorcan workshop responsible for the production of illuminated manuscripts and panel paintings. Other works attributed to him include a Leyes Palatinas of King James II of Mallorca (Brussels, Bib. Royale Albert 1er, MS. 9169), datable to c. 1337, the retable of St Eulalia in Palma de Mallorca Cathedral and the retable of St Quiteria (Palma de Mallorca, Soc. Arqueol. Lul-Liana). The retable of St Eulalia was commissioned by Bishop Berenguer Batlle (d 1349). All these works are linked by a style revealing Italian influence, notably that of the Sienese school. Although the Master evidently closely studied the works of Duccio, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti, he also retained a strong attachment to Spanish traditions. This is seen in his hieratically arranged, frontal and highly formal compositions and in the use of strong, vibrant primary colours.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
