Master of the Munich Golden Legend

( fl c. 1420–60). Illuminator, active in France. This master was named by Spencer from a copy of the French translation of the Golden Legend in Munich (Munich, Bayer. Staatsbib., Cod. gall. 3). It has an extensive cycle of illustrations, all in the same style, notable for the use of line to hatch flat areas of colour and to define facial features and other details. The style appears in numerous manuscripts, first collected by Spencer, in miniatures of varying degrees of competence; it seems that at least at certain stages of his career the Master was working with associates who ably copied his easily repeated linearity. Perhaps attributable to a distinct assistant are the miniatures that show more modelling in colour and less reliance on black line for detail, as in a Book of Hours of Paris Use (Baltimore, MD, Walters A.G., MS. W. 288).

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
