Marussig, Piero

(b Trieste, 10 May 1879; d Pavia, 13 Oct 1937). Italian painter. He was the son of a wealthy businessman and collector. He went to Vienna and Munich, where he joined the Secession. He then lived in Rome for two years (1903–5) and spent a year in Paris (1905), where he studied Post-Impressionism and Fauvism. On his return to Italy in 1906 he lived in Trieste and until about 1919 painted in a loosely expressionistic style. Marussig adopted a technique of outlining his figures with bold contours. Works of this period, such as The Sisters (Milan, Gal. A. Mod.), are imbued with melancholic overtones, produced by the combination of heavily impastoed brushwork, strong colours and subdued light.
