Maris.
Dutch family of painters. The family consisted of three brothers: the eldest was (1) Jacob Maris, who started as a figure painter but later turned to painting town- and landscapes. He was one of the leading painters of the HAGUE SCHOOL, along with Jozef Israëls and Anton Mauve. His brother (2) Matthijs Maris painted fantastic castles and scenes with figures. The youngest brother was (3) Willem Maris, known primarily for his paintings of cattle at pasture and ducks by the waterside. In the 1860s all three shared a studio in The Hague.
