MacWhirter, John
(b Slateford, 27 March 1839; d London, 28 Jan 1911). Scottish painter. Abandoning an apprenticeship with the Edinburgh booksellers Oliver & Boyd, he entered the Trustees Academy in 1851 under Robert Scott Lauder and John Ballantyne (1815–97). He first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy at 14 and by 16 made the first of many continental tours. He later journeyed to Norway and Constantinople and across America.
