López Méndez, Luis Alfredo

(b Caracas, 23 Nov 1901). Venezuelan painter. In 1912 he began studying at the Academia de Bellas Artes, Caracas, under Pedro Zerpa and Cirilo Almeida Crespo, among others. He became dedicated to landscape painting and received lessons from Samys Mützner and Emilio Boggio. In 1919 López Méndez travelled to Puerto Rico for political reasons; from there he went to Mexico, the USA, Cuba and finally Europe, returning to Venezuela in 1936 where he held important posts in artistic and political fields. In his work he depicted the valley of Caracas, El Avila mountain, the eastern Venezuelan beaches and exotic women (e.g. Nude, 1941; Caracas, Gal. A. N.). His work reflected the artistic concerns of the generation of the reformist, anti-academic movement the Círculo de Bellas Artes and of the school of Caracas. In 1943 he was awarded the national painting prize.
