Legot, Pablo

(b Marche, Luxembourg, 1598; d Cádiz, 1671). Spanish painter. Legot’s parents moved from Luxembourg, then under Spanish rule, to Seville in 1610. It has long been believed that his first profession was that of embroiderer, and he appears as such in the registration of his marriage in 1619. In 1628 he is recorded as painter to the Archbishop of Seville, and in this capacity he undertook a large number of works, which he subcontracted to other painters. In 1635 he was appointed maritime customs official (Alguacil Fiscal del Real Almirantazgo) at Cádiz, and he continued to paint there until c. 1665, when ill-health forced him gradually to abandon painting.
