Leeuw, Willem van der

(b Antwerp, c. 1603; d Antwerp, ?1665). Flemish etcher and engraver. He trained with Pieter Soutman, himself a pupil of Rubens, and engraved reproductions of paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt and Jan Lievens. His engravings after Rubens include Lot and his Daughters (Hollstein, no. 1), the Martyrdom of St Catherine (Hollstein, no. 7) and a few hunting scenes. Examples of his work after Rembrandt are David Playing the Harp before Saul (Hollstein, no. 2), Tobias and his Wife (Hollstein, no. 4) and a number of portraits of women (e.g. Hollstein, nos 15–16). Occasionally van der Leeuw managed to create an attractive chiaroscuro effect, as in Daniel in the Lion’s Den (Hollstein, no. 3).
