Lauder.

Scottish family of painters. James Thompson Lauder, a portrait painter, had two cousins, sons of John Lauder, a tanner in Edinburgh, who became well-known painters of historical subjects. The elder brother, (1) Robert Scott Lauder, also executed portraits, landscapes and genre and biblical scenes. The younger, (2) James Eckford Lauder, also painted genre scenes. Both brothers spent several years in Italy, returning to Britain in the 1830s, where they made major contributions to Scottish art until their deaths in the 1860s. James Thompson Lauder’s son Charles James Lauder (b 1841; d Glasgow, 27 April 1920) was a distinguished painter of architectural views and of landscapes in watercolour. He is known to have studied at the Glasgow School of Design and was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, from 1872 to 1900 and of the Royal Society of Watercolourists, Glasgow. From 1890 he exhibited his work in galleries in London and also lived in Italy for many years, returning to Scotland in later life.
