Laprade, Cláudio de
(b Avignon, 1682; d Lisbon, 1738). French sculptor, active in Portugal. He received his training in Avignon, an important centre of French Baroque art where Gallic and Italian influences met. It is possible that Laprade frequented the same workshop as Jean Péru (1643–after 1707) and Pierre Péru (1645–?c. 1700), the sons of the better-known Michel Péru (d 1670). He went to Portugal before the age of 20 and in 1703 married Jeanne Joubert, his countrywoman. At that time he was in the Guarda Alemã da Rainha (the Queen’s German Guard), in which he reached the rank of captain.
