Kocher and Frey.

American architectural partnership formed in 1930 by Alfred Lawrence Kocher (b San Jose, CA, 24 July 1885; d Williamsburg, VA, 6 June 1969) and Albert Frey (b Zurich, 18 Oct 1903; d Palm Springs, CA, 14 Nov 1998). Kocher studied at Stanford University, CA, Pennsylvania State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then taught architecture, primarily at Pennsylvania State University, where he was head of the department. From 1928 to 1938 he edited the Architectural Record, promoting innovative designs by European and American architects. After a brief partnership with Gerhard Ziegler, Kocher associated with Albert Frey, who had worked previously with Le Corbusier and the firm of Howe & Lescaze in New York and Philadelphia. Together they designed the Aluminaire House (1931), built for an exhibition in New York and later sold to the architect Wallace K. Harrison, who re-erected it as a summer-house at Syosset, Long Island. It was represented in the International Style exhibition held at MOMA, New York, in 1932. A project for a real estate office (1934–5) in Palm Springs, CA, took Frey back to the West Coast, where he subsequently remained in practice. Kocher taught at Black Mountain College, NC, from 1940 to 1943. There he designed the Studies Building, a large, adaptable timber-framed structure with a glass and asbestos skin, supported on stone and concrete walls and slender steel columns. From 1944 to 1954 he worked as an architectural recorder on conservation and restoration projects at Williamsburg, VA.
