Klotz [Clotz], Valentijn [Valentin; Valentinus]

(b c. 1650; d The Hague, after 1718). Dutch draughtsman. He may have come from the province of Limburg, where his surname is recorded in the 17th century. His first dated drawing is from 1667. In 1670 he was in Maastricht, where he must have met his fellow topographical draughtsman Josua de Grave. In 1671–2 both artists worked in the area of Bergen-op-Zoom, where Klotz made a large number of drawings (many are in Bergen-op-Zoom, Gemeentemus.), executed mainly in brown ink and grey wash. Between 1672 and 1676 he travelled as an amateur with the army of the Dutch States General under Prince William III of Orange Nassau during the campaign in the southern Netherlands. Drawings dated from 1694 to 1718 of The Hague and environs are evidence of his residence there.
