(2) Fritz Klimsch

(b Frankfurt am Main, 10 Feb 1870; d Freiburg im Breisgau, 30 March 1960). Sculptor, son of (1) Eugen Johann Georg Klimsch. He studied painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin but then changed to sculpture. From 1886 to 1894 he studied first under Albert Wolff and then under Fritz Schaper, both followers of the school of Christian Daniel Rauch. In this period he produced his first works, such as Achilles with the Body of Patroclus (1886) and Christ and Mary Magdalene (1892). On completing his studies he won the Grosser Staatspreis with distinction for his work, the prize including a scholarship to spend a year in Rome. Through a trip to Paris in 1894 he became familiar with the works of Rodin, which impressed him deeply. His journey to Italy (Rome, Florence, Genoa, Naples) followed in 1895. Back in Berlin, Klimsch established his own studio and regularly contributed to the great art exhibitions in Berlin. He achieved recognition with Dancer (1898), which was bought by the Nationalgalerie, then a yardstick of artistic quality. The statuette, depicting the dancer Valentine Petit, is one of the most important works of Berlin Jugendstil. In 1898 Klimsch was a founder-member of the Berlin Secession with Lovis Corinth and Walter Leistikow, and was a member of its board until 1910. When the association dissolved in 1913, he joined the Freie Sezession, although the exhibitions of neither provided his main forum for presenting works.
