Kantounis [Candounis], Nikolaos [Nicolas]

(b Zakynthos, 28 Jan 1768; d Zakynthos, 25 April 1834). Greek painter. He became a priest at the age of 19, as had Nikolaos Koutouzis, whom he took as a model both as regards his way of life and his painting. Italian and in particular Venetian painting remained a common source for them both. Kantounis was a good draughtsman and also possessed notable compositional abilities, as can be seen from his more densely populated pictures. He concentrated on religious subjects and portraits. Some of his more important works are: Scenes from the Life of Christ (Zakynthos, Mus.), which were originally in the churches of SS Cosmas and Damian and of St George in Kypriana, Zakynthos, SS Basil, John and Gregory (Zakynthos, Mus.), a portrait of the pharmacist Dikopoulos and a portrait of Elizabeth Martinengou (both Athens, N.G.).
