(3) Kaigetsudo Dohan

( fl Edo [now Tokyo], c. 1710s). Painter and print designer. He was a direct pupil of (1) Kaigetsudo Ando and, like him, produced full-length portraits of courtesans from the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter. In his kakemono (hanging scroll) paintings Dohan’s style is stiffer and more formal than that of Ando or of his colleagues (2) Kaigetsudo Anchi, Doshin, Doshu and Doshu. When his work was translated into the medium of the woodblock print, Dohan’s faults were often overcome by the skills of the block carver. He is one of the undisputed early masters of the Japanese print.

Part of the Kaigetsudo family
