(1) J(ens) A(dolf) Jerichau
(b Assens, Fyn, 17 April 1816; d Neder Dråby, nr Frederikssund, 24 July 1883). Sculptor and teacher. He studied at the Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi in Copenhagen (18318), initially as a painter, then from 1836 as a sculptor under Hermann Ernst Freund. From summer 1838 he studied in Rome, where he worked in Bertel Thorvaldsens studio for a year. Apart from a brief stay in Denmark in the summer of 1846, he remained in Rome until 1849. The last 34 years of his life he spent in Denmark as a professor, in the life class at the Kunstakademi, and he became its Director in 185763.
